Distance based road charging

Sweco is the leading actor in the Arena project which develops, tests and demonstrates an concept for a Swedish road user charging scheme for heavy goods vehicles.

 The main goal of the Arena project is to create an understanding within the industry and a political arena for the road user charging scheme and its possibilities and limitations. This is partly done by demonstrations and field trials, which is to be conducted on a test site in southern Sweden, starting November 2009. The field trials has been internationally noticed and there are nine companies that will contribute with their on board unit for the test.

Arena is an R&D (Research and Development) project and serves as a platform for cooperation within the area of road user charging. The Swedish Road Administration, Vinnova and European Union sponsor the project. Phase two of the project started in 2008 and is scheduled to last until 2011 and has a budget of 2.5 M Euro.
