More fast chargers for electric cars along Sweden's major roads

17 April 2018

Where is there a need for fast chargers for electric cars along the major roads in Sweden? Sweco will investigate this on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration, with the aim of promoting vehicles that use alternative fuels. All in the effort to create the conditions for new travel behaviour and be fossil-free in 2030.

One measure to take in reaching the goal of having fossil-free vehicles by 2030, is to increase the electrification of the transport sector. For more people to choose vehicles with alternative fuels, better facilities to charge electric vehicles are required, enabling longer trips. Sweco is supporting the Swedish Transport Administration in its governmental assignment to review the need for fast charging infrastructure along the major roads in Sweden. Using fast chargers, an electric car is charged to up to 80% of its battery capacity in 30 minutes, compared with one night to charge the same car at home.

"For many years, we have been working on the development of charging infrastructure in Sweden and Europe as part of the sustainable development of society. And so, it is great to be commissioned to continue analysing the need for fast charging along major roads and its connection to the grid", advises Cecilia Wallmark, Team Manager - Energy Strategies, for Sweco in Sweden.

"Charging infrastructure is crucial for the further development of the introduction of alternative fuels. With more fast chargers it can be easier to take the step of switching to an electric car and it is motivational being part of that work", advises Magnus Lindén, a Sweco expert in smart grids.

Sweco's project involves producing the decision-making data for the charging of electric cars and the power supply of same, in connection with the need for additional charging infrastructure to support an increase in the number of electric vehicles in Sweden.
