One way to create a more efficient energy supply while simultaneously reducing costs is to use what is known as energy storage. This is a smart way of harnessing surplus energy for consumption when most it is needed. The inter-connection of systems creates smart grids in which energy consumption is optimised to generate economic and environmental benefits.
The aim of smart grids is to create a consumption of electricity that is as even as possible, by controlling the behaviour of electricity consumers and optimising the operation of such aspects as energy storage, electricity production and electricity transmission. Renewable energy solutions generate greater need for energy storage. Electricity must be used when it is produced, but as the share of intermittent electricity production grows, the need to be able to store the produced energy increases.
