HALLANDSÅS PROJECT: HIGHER CAPACITY AND DOUBLING OF FREIGHT LOAD

The Hallandsås project is a nationally well known initiative in which the Swedish Transport Administration has built two 8.7-kilometre long parallel railway tunnels through the Hallandsås Ridge. The tunnels have made it possible to increase capacity from four trains per hour to 24 and have doubled the potential freight load on the section. A unique project where a new technology was created in order to drill a watertight tunnel.

Assignment

Sweco has served as production manager for all contractors and has contributed expertise in several other areas of operation. One such example is Sweco’s capabilities in BIM (Building Information Modelling) for infrastructure, which has received praise in the project.

The railway works in the Hallandsås Project are highly complex it and it been a major challenge to take on these tasks parallel to ongoing tunnel construction, with conditions that are constantly changing. But an innovative BIM method that continuously updates the information has ensured higher efficiency and quality throughout the design, construction and management phases.

The BIM process creates a virtual 3D model with detailed information that is connected to each object, for example blueprints and article numbers. A special 3D object library provides information that can then be linked to different processes and areas of use such as quantity calculation of materials, measurement of property boundaries and machine control in connection with construction.

By enabling the involved contractors to build according to the BIM model, they have access to coordinated information that has been reviewed by several parties. This makes it possible to significantly increase the production efficiency of the contractors.

Aside from BIM coordination and production management, Sweco has contributed expertise in project engineering, construction management for overhead line equipment and telecom systems, data coordination and environmental coordination.
