Mall of Scandinavia in Solna, outside Stockholm, is Scandinavia’s largest shopping centre with more than 220 shops and restaurants. Since the start of the project in 2013, Sweco has provided a wide range of services. Grontmij, which is now part of Sweco, has also played a key role in the project as structural designer. Several of Sweco’s areas of operation have been involved in the construction of Mall of Scandinavia, which is the first new shopping mall to be built in Stockholm since the 1990s.
Assignment: Construction of Mall of Scandinavia in Solna
Areas of operation: Project management, electrical engineering and automation engineering.
Sweco’s project managers have been active in the project on two fronts, with the landlord and tenants as separate clients. For Unibail-Rodamco, the landlord and property owner of Mall of Scandinavia, Sweco’s assignment has been to handle matters related to tenant coordination and coordination of the working environment, fire protection systems and logistics. Sweco has also worked in close collaboration with the building contractor PEAB and the tenants.
The largest tenant is SF Bio AB, which has opened its most state-of-the-art multiplex cinema containing Scandinavia’s first commercial IMAX theatre. Filmstaden Scandinavia is SF Bio’s most high-profile and largest investment to date. Sweco’s project managers have been contracted by SF Bio as an external adviser and project manager. In the assignment Sweco has assisted the client with lease negotiations, planning and design, tendering and implementation.
Aside from Sweco’s project managers, our electrical engineering and automation consultants have been involved in in the mall’s electrical and control systems as coordinator and operational tester.
For Grontmij, which was contracted by PEAB, the assignment as lead designer with responsibility for coordination of sub-suppliers’ engineering work has been the company’s largest by a wide margin.
Mall of Scandinavia has been certified according to the global environmental and sustainability standard BREEAM with a rating of Excellent in the Design Stage. This marks the first time that a Swedish shopping centre project has attained the Excellent level.
